9:00 am - 9:50 am ThinkTank: Building For Needs Rather Than What Funds Allow: Re-Thinking Funding, Collaboration and Planning to Deliver Infrastructure That Hits The Mark

Claire Harris - Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services, Northern Sydney Local Health District
Joanne Holden - Service Transformation & General Manager, Bathurst Health Service,, Western NSW Local Health District

This thinktank will examine the tensions across patient-centered design, the practical needs of healthcare providers, such as efficient workflows, infection control, and staff safety and the funding and role of the state government. We’ll unpack these points in detail with the help of seasoned clinical and capital project executives to work out how best we can strike a balance across these cohorts.

  • Understanding the differing motivations driving hospital projects across the Health Ministry, the Department of Health, the local health services and the engineering/architecture teams
  • Getting creative with budgets, PPPs and partnerships to deliver infra that the community needs,
  • Finding creative design and planning solutions that address clinical, patient and health system needs
  • Co-design governance - setting clear expectations around its value and influence on hospital planning and design
  • Assessing and measuring benefits of planned facilities post delivery

9:50 am - 10:30 am Hospital 2.0: Dramatically Transforming Hospital Design, Procurement and Construction Through 40 New Hospitals Across England

Josie Rudman - Transformation Director and Chief Nurse, New Hospitals Programme, NHS England

Like most health systems, the NHS finds itself operating services within ageing infrastructure that’s ill-suited for the needs of a contemporary health system founded upon innovative care models and ways of working. Focused on affordability and standardization and yet, underpinned by radical innovation in hospital planning and design, the £20 Billion New Hospital Programme is offering NHS a way of envisioning the future of healthcare.

  • Josie is the clinical executive voice of this program, working across any and every stakeholder to help the program deliver infrastructure that meets the needs of the carer and the patient alike. This talk will see her sharing the unique approach to large scale capital project delivery she is leading. She’ll share:
  • Setting up councils across workforce, innovation, clinical workstreams and more to challenge conventional thinking around healthcare
  • Leveraging the programme to drive model of care shifts and address regional/rural healthcare challenges
  • Modernizing design to support healing staff and patient environments
  • Baking sustainability as a strategic driver across build, design and future operations
  • Striking the balance between infra design standardization and customization of healthcare practices through infrastructures – considerations, opportunities and challenges
